Dry

Sacramento Bee has a small item on the Sierra snowpack. Officials found that, “statewide snowpack stands at only 61 percent of average for the winter so far; this likely ensures California will see its third straight drought year.”
The WSJ has a longer article on the findings. It puts the drought in perspective:
Droughts of three years or longer have been rare over the past century in California, said Mr. Anderson, the state climatologist. The state has had two notable droughts: in the 1930s during the Dust Bowl era, and a six-year drought from 1987 to 1992. He said it is nearly impossible to determine how long this drought will last, or whether global warming is a factor. “These things are best evaluated in hindsight,” he said.
This story could end up being as big or bigger than the California budget crisis. I’ll keep my eyes open for news on how the drought will likely affect us here in Sacramento.
